After 5 years of dreaming and after developing countless prototype sketch models the launch pad to my dream of independent design has officially begun..
Over the past 5 years, I have been a regular at the IDS and other design festivals. The talent and perseverance of the independent exhibiting designers and makers is remarkable. Their passion is contagious and has fueled my dream to launch my independent ideas into the world.
But the big question is for every young designer is – where do you start?
There are many answers yet no “right” answer to this question. I don’t pretend to have a secret formula or magical insight, but tons of hard work and relentless passion are good places to start.
The goal of this blog is to share my journey with other young designers. I hope to give some insight into what it’s like to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
With that said – let us begin!
I can actually say that I have taken my first real leap. I have just engaged in the prototyping/production phase of my design piece for IDS14. I will be working alongside a facility in Toronto ON who are prototyping/producing my piece for the show. This facility has worked on countless pieces for the show as well projects for multinational industrial designers.
Finding a good prototyping and production facility to bring my design to life is almost as important as my initial design. The prototyping/production process is expensive and can cost $5,000 (and up). Ensuring you can communicate effectively and that you feel comfortable with any type of production facility is important. The end result of the product will be largely determined by the success of this communication and partnership.
So we’re moving full steam ahead!
I should be receiving some samples early next week - samples of what you ask? What have I designed?
More to come in the upcoming weeks!
